Let's look into the STANDARD WORKING HOURS

Smart phones and tablets are almost becoming the necessity in Hong Kong people’s daily life. Thanks to the rapid development of Cloud technology and wireless network recent years, the use of all kinds of mobile devices starts expanding from personal pastime to commercial application. Therefore, there are more and more white-collar workers like to bring their own mobile devices to work, and this working mode is usually called BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). According to Gartner’s research which interviewed the global information management recently, there are 38% of enterprises may stop providing mobile devices for employees in 2016. Gartner even predicts that there will be 50% of employers request their employees to bring their own mobile devices to work in 2017. For this almost irreversible BYOD trend, enterprises should really re-examine the existing operation mode to investigate how BYOD can help employees to improve their productivity and free from time and geographical constraints to access real time information anytime anywhere.

Facing this BYOD wave, many enterprises show their resistance and denial attitude. They think smart phones and tablets will distract their employees from work, so as to affect their performance. However, the truth is that there is more and more enterprises start accepting the BYOD working mode. They realize employees will be more devoting and more satisfied when using their own devices to work. And it lifts up their productivity and quality of work. To some employees who always need to perform outdoor duties, for example sales, maintenance staff and management of the Multinational Corporations, they seldom stay in office. BYOD is exactly the best way for them to work at any places. Moreover, BYOD can save a huge amount of purchasing and maintenance cost of the hardware for the enterprise. Overall, BYOD does more good than harm to the enterprises for lifting the operating efficiency.

With these advantages of BYOD, what should the enterprises do to coordinate? Firstly, enterprises may consider to help the employees to integrate the office email accounts to their personal mobile devices. It is to let them check the office email anytime. Cloud service is becoming more and more mature in recent years, which allow desktops and mobile devices to transfer files among themselves easily. Also, a lot of apps on the market can edit files like Word, Excel and PDF, enterprises can put company’s files to Cloud and share with employees to facilitate their work with mobile devices.

Nevertheless, the above BYOD application method is not comprehensive enough. It is because except using emails and electronic files, employees also need to login to different enterprise solutions, like ERP, HRM, CRM, POS etc. The real way to make use of BYOD is to integrate these systems into employees’ mobile devices and let them access the information inside the system in real time. There are some apps on the market which can link with different types of enterprise solutions. They allow users to receive and update business information continuously, help them to check the sales figures, inventory, employees working hours etc. Moreover, the apps allow employees who perform outdoor duties to use their smart phones or tablets to capture what they see and what they hear, then upload to the enterprise system immediately. By doing this, colleagues who work at headquarters can have a clear understanding of their situation and provide support quickly.

Whenever there is new technology introduced, the first word people usually think of is “Security”. Undoubtedly, when there is enterprise information to circulate on personal devices, risks exist. However, enterprises should face with a positive attitude instead of escaping from it. The key to success in business is to deploy corresponding mobile device management measures as soon as possible, and to strike for a balance between convenience and security.
